Mitchell Pearce quits as Newcastle NRL captain amid texting scandal

Mitchell Pearce has quit as captain of Newcastle after revelations he sent inappropriate messages to a female staffer at the NRL club.

The star playmaker has told his Knights teammates of his decision after returning to the club from a Christmas break this week.

He is set to face the media on Thursday.

Pearce’s wedding last month was cancelled over the texting scandal, which is also speculated to have caused a rift in the playing group.

The 31 year old has apologised to club leaders for the distraction the scandal has caused.

“Pearce’s decision followed a lengthy review of current issues, last season’s performance and reflection upon the added pressure the captaincy brings to both his on field performance and personal life,” the club said in a statement on Wednesday.

“The club is fully supportive of his decision.”

It was also revealed backrower Lachlan Fitzgibbon is a close acquaintance of the staff member who received the texts from Pearce.

On Tuesday, Newcastle general manager of football Danny Buderus conceded the issue had the potential to “fester” if not addressed.

“There will be an address from Mitchell,” Buderus said.

“One of our players is close to one of the people in the parties, so he’s showed some leadership in and around it and understanding what he needs to move forward.

“We’re addressing all of those things within the group to make sure all parties are happy to get back out on the footy field and do what they love, which is play rugby league.”
