Sydney school, early learning centre children told to self-isolate as NSW Coronavirus cases rise

Students in a Sydney school and an early learning centre will be forced to go into isolation for two weeks as New South Wales records new coronavirus cases.

This as 13 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed on Tuesday forcing students and faculty at a Sydney high school, and toddlers and staff at an early learning centre to self-isolate.

Of them, 11 were locally acquired through known sources and two are returned travellers in hotel quarantine. Seven of the 11 cases are linked to the Sydney CBD cluster, taking the total number of cases in the outbreak to 41.

Three of the new cases attended St Paul’s Catholic College in Greystanes and NSW Health has directed all Year 10 students at the school to self-isolate for 14 days and gets tested.

All staff and students at Reddam Early Learning Centre in Lindfield have also been identified as close contacts and have been directed to self-isolate for 14 days and get tested.

It comes as two staff at the centre tested positive to COVID-19.

Anyone who dined at It’s Time for Thai restaurant in Newtown on August 28 from 5-8 pm is also considered a close contact and is directed to get tested and self-isolate for 14 days.

One of the new cases is also linked to cases at Liverpool Hospital.

Several new venues and public transport settings in Sydney have also been put on alert.

Meanwhile, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has announced an easing of the state’s border permit system with Victoria, re-establishing a 50km border buffer zone.

The zone will be expanded from 2.5km to 50km on Friday to help border communities go about their lives as normal.

A reduction in new COVID-19 cases in Victoria had made it possible to ease restrictions, Berejiklian said on Tuesday.

“Pandemics are far from perfection when it comes to having to make decisions quickly and can I tell you, hand on heart, that one of the most difficult decisions I’ve made personally, and the government has made during this pandemic, has been closing the NSW-Victorian border,” Berejiklian told reporters in Albury.
