Queensland records three new COVID cases as restrictions are set to ease

Queensland has recorded three new cases of coronavirus, after four days with no new cases.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the new cases on Saturday.

Of the three, two are in crew members from an international vessel in hospital and one is an overseas traveller in quarantine.

Coronavirus restrictions in Queensland are set to ease on October 1.

Queensland has recorded one new case of coronavirus on Sunday, Palaszczuk also announced.

The new case is in a returned overseas traveller in hotel quarantine. It was detected out of more than 3,000 tests.

There are currently eight active cases in the state.

Police Minister Mark Ryan says 2025 police personnel, including 1450 frontline officers, will be deployed over the next five years.

There are currently 12,000 officers across the state.

The announcement comes as both the Labor government and the Liberal National Party opposition hone in on law and order in the lead-up to the October 31 state election.

“This is a historic day for the Queensland police service as well as also community safety in Queensland,” Ryan said.

The government will locate 150 new police in key regions, 50 in child protection, 300 in communication, prosecutions and watchhouses, 125 in liaisons and school-based support and another 100 police support roles including wellbeing and injury management consultants.

“All of that support is extraordinarily important to keep the community safe,” said Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll.

The case comes as Palaszczuk also announced nearly 1500 extra police will be on the beat in the state after the government unveiled $624 million in funding for the force.
