Victoria to relax Coronavirus measures after a drop in cases

Australia’s virus hot spot Victoria says it will relax pandemic restrictions in most areas from Wednesday night.

Premier Daniel Andrews said Tuesday that people who live outside the state capital, Melbourne, would have no restrictions on leaving their homes and all shops will be able to reopen.

Andrews also urged Melbourne residents not to get discouraged about staying in lockdown as the rest of the state opens up.

People are not allowed to leave Australia’s second-largest city without approved reasons and police would tighten checkpoints on routes from Melbourne as the rest of the state opens up.

Australia on Tuesday recorded its first day without a single reported COVID-19 death since July 13.

Meanwhile, New South Wales has recorded seven new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours.

Four of those are returned travellers in hotel quarantine.

Of the three locally acquired cases one is a household contact of a previous case linked to Concord Hospital, and another is a healthcare worker at Liverpool Hospital. The third case is still under investigation.

Another student at Blue Mountains Grammar school has also tested positive to the virus and will be included in tomorrow’s figures, NSW Health said.

“The school is now closed while further tracing and cleaning is undertaken.”

One of the four cases in hotel quarantine is a person who came from Victoria.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said today the three locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the state is promising but is urging people to continue getting tested.

“This is a solid result however we are concerned about testing result,” she said.

Ms Berejiklian said with school holidays coming up more people are likely to be moving around the state and she does not want to see the virus spread.
