Victoria records 55 new Covid-19 cases, 8 deaths

At least 55 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded in the past 24 hours in Victoria with the death toll also rising by eight.

The fatalities include two men in their 60s, two men in their 80s and one woman, and three men in their 90s.

“We of course send our condolences, sympathies, and best wishes to each of those eight families,” Premier Andrews said. Of the deaths, six were linked to aged care outbreaks. The state’s death toll has risen to 683.

There are 238 Victorians in the hospital, including 22 receiving intensive care and 13 people on ventilators, Prime Minister Daniel Andrews said.

The state’s total number of active cases is 1696, with just 82 active cases in regional Victoria. There were no new cases recorded in regional Victoria overnight.

Meanwhile, thousands of concerned parents called for grade six students to return to Melbourne schools.

Colac has 25 active cases due to an outbreak, with 16 in Greater Geelong, two in Greater Bendigo, and one in Ballarat.

“One person has meant that some 25 people in that community have tested positive,” Mr. Andrews said.

However, the premier said case numbers in regional Victoria were “steadily falling”. There are 260 active positive cases among healthcare workers.

Today’s figures are slightly up from yesterday when Victoria recorded its lowest daily total since June 26, reporting just 44 new cases.

On this day last month, Victoria recorded nearly 400 new infections after reaching its peak of 687 cases just four days earlier.

Senior officials from the Department of Health and Human Services will this week travel to Sydney to ensure Victoria’s COVID-19 contact tracing system aligns with the “gold standard” of New South Wales.
