Sydney’s iconic New Year’s Eve fireworks to push through with Covid-19 restrictions

The much-awaited Sydney New Year’s Eve fireworks will still push through in its usual colourful light display at the harbour but with restrictions in place amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says she hopes Sydney will be able to have its harbour fireworks spectacular as her government focuses on what the state can do amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“I’d like to see it go ahead in a COVID-safe way if we can manage that,” she told reporters on Wednesday.

“If it does proceed, it won’t be like every other year with crowds everywhere.”

“Most of us will be watching it from home, in a COVID-safe way, or we might go down to the local park.”

“These are issues that we are working through.”

Earlier on Wednesday, NSW deputy premier John Barilaro questioned whether the fireworks should go ahead, saying they were “too risky” during a pandemic.

Several annual summer events such as the Tamworth Music Festival have already been canceled as large crowds would breach coronavirus rules.

But the premier said she would meet with Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore in the coming weeks to discuss how the fireworks could go ahead in a “COVID-safe” way.
