Lady Gaga, The Weeknd win top prizes in MTV VMAS 2020

Lady Gaga, The Weeknd, and Korean boyband BTS took top prizes in this year’s special MTV Video Music Awards.

The MTV Video Music Awards held late Sunday, August 30 was a special event with Coronavirus pandemic precautions in mind as this year’s edition did not have a live audience.

Performers also took the stage in different locations across New York City.

The show kicked with a tribute to Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, who died on August 28 after battling colon cancer.

“We dedicate tonight’s show to a man whose spirit touched so many,” VMAS host Keke Palmer said. “He is a true hero, not just on-screen, but in everything he did. His impact lives forever,” she added.

Palmer then talked about the challenges of 2020, saying that “there have been incredible moments of inspiration,” as the world battles the coronavirus.

“We’ve seen heroes go up and beyond, whether they drive a delivery truck, work in a grocery store, or serve frontlines in a hospital. And with the Black Lives Matter movement, we’ve seen our generation step up, take to the streets, and make sure our voices will be heard. Enough is enough,” she said.

Among the live performers included BTS, Lady Gaga, and Ariana Grande, who won the coveted “moon man” trophies for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.
