Digital platforms set to pay for news

Facebook and Google will be forced to negotiate with major Australian media organisations on how much they will pay for news content on their platforms.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg is set to brief coalition MPs at a partyroom meeting in Canberra on Tuesday before publicly releasing details of the reforms.

Media reports suggest the ABC and SBS will be included in the media bargaining code alongside commercial news organisations.

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairman Rod Sims initially excluded the broadcasters from the draft code because they were publicly funded.

Labor and the Greens have also argued the national newswire Australian Associated Press and small publishers should be included.

The Australian Financial Review reported on Monday the two major digital platforms would be allowed to count the monetary worth of online readers they deliver news websites to determine how much they will pay out.

Independent mediators would step in if commercial deals can’t be negotiated.

The AFR also reported Instagram and YouTube would be excluded from the laws, which are expected to be introduced to federal parliament on Wednesday.

The draft laws will go to a parliamentary inquiry before being voted on early in the new year.
