Serena Williams sends tennis world into a spin with bold outfit

Serena Williams has blitzed through the first round of the Australian Open and did it in a striking new outfit that sent the tennis world into a spin.

Andy Murray’s mother Judy led the chorus of praise for Williams’ catsuit as she dominated Laura Siegemund 6-1 6-1 at Rod Laver Arena on Monday.

Williams wore a black, red and pink, one-legged suit which joins a long list of striking outfits the 39-year-old has worn at grand slams throughout her decorated career.

Her black catsuit at the 2019 French Open made headlines around the world and Williams was back at her fashionable best in Melbourne.

“Serena rocking the one-legged catsuit #girlpower,” Jude Murray tweeted.

American writer Danny Santaromita added: “I know the Super Bowl is on, but everyone needs to see what Serena is wearing”.

Tennis fan David Suarez tweeted: “Serena is looking mighty fine! I am loving the ABBA inspired catsuit…I’m hoping there is a white and blue version as well.”

Williams later revealed she was influenced by the late, great American sprinting superstar Florence Griffith-Joyner.

“I was inspired by FloJo, who was a wonderful track athlete, amazing athlete when I was growing up,” Williams told reporters.

“I was like oh my god, this is so brilliant. That’s where we started.”

Griffith-Joyner, who tragically died aged 38 in 1998, still holds the records for the 100m and 200m sprints.

Meanwhile, Williams showed no signs of a shoulder injury as she strolled into the second round.

The seven-time champion lost the opening game but then swept aside Siegemund in less than an hour.

The 10th seed had withdrawn from a lead-up tournament semi-final against Ash Barty but didn’t appear hindered in the one-sided affair.
