Is NMN the secret to long life?

While we cannot reverse our chronological age, several longevity studies have shown that we can actually rewind the clock to our biological age by as much as 20 years. Has there been an elixir of life or a fountain of youth been discovered somewhere? Apparently, it’s not what you are probably thinking. The anti-aging secret that has recently been unlocked is NMN or Nicotinamide mononucleotide.

Before we deal with NMN, to fully understand the science behind its anti-aging properties, we’ll start with nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide or NAD+. NAD+ is a molecule that acts as a coenzyme in many critical processes in our body, including cellular energy production and DNA repair.

Without NAD+ acting as a coenzyme, these processes of cell energy production and DNA repair would not exist.

Studies have shown that NAD+ levels decline with age. This change is what scientists like Harvard geneticist Dr. Robert Sinclair now considers a hallmark of aging as he discovers that this important coenzyme would help promote longevity and knock off 20 years off his biological age.

Sinclair’s study revealed that lower NAD+ levels are also responsible for many age-related conditions like cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and even cancer.

“The reason we can extend the lifespan of animals is not that we can just make them live longer, but we keep them healthy. The animals don’t get heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s until sometimes 20 percent later in their life. And so that’s 20 percent longer youth, not just 20 percent longer life,” Sinclair said.

But NAD+ in supplement form has poor bioavailability and it doesn’t have much of an effect when introduced to the body.

Enter NMN. It is an intermediate that acts as a precursor when taken as a supplement and according to studies can increase NAD+ levels and prolong the lifespan of yeast, worms, and mice.

But how does it affect humans? Human safety trials conducted in taking NMN show that the drug is safe and well-tolerated at the dosage used.

The study at the Clinical Trial Unit, Keio University School of Medicine in Japan included a total of 10 healthy men aged between 40 and 60 years old and observed them ensure that there were no adverse side effects.

During the study, the researchers also observed various biomarkers, and no significant changes were evident following the single dose of NMN.

The researchers also could not detect NMN in the blood samples taken in the study, but this is likely due to them being frozen before extraction, which degraded the NMN.

Sinclair said taking NMN and Resveratrol, a plant compound that acts like an antioxidant is critical to the inactivation of sirtuin genes. Sirtuins play a key role in functions that help us to live longer – such as DNA repair.

What are the benefits of taking NMN?

Taking NMN has a lot of benefits. NMN is quickly and efficiently utilized in all cells and tissues throughout the body, making it very effective at restoring cellular NAD+ levels.

Whilst there are other NAD+ precursors available on the market, NMN is the most effective. Increasing NAD+ levels has been shown to fight many age-related diseases and disorders.

Restoring NAD+ may help fight the effects of aging. Increased NAD+ levels have been linked to improved energy and DNA repair.

Taking NMN has also resulted in increased NAD+ which helps improve cognition, cardiovascular health, improve cellular signaling, improve immune strength, and reduce inflammation.

NAD+ cannot be taken directly as the coenzyme is too large to pass through the cell membrane. It needs a precursor-like NMN that enters the cells via a newly discovered pathway which then converts into NAD+ within the cell, effectively boosting NAD+ levels.

Where can you get an NMN supplement?
