COVID-19 Disaster Payment applications open to some Sydney residents from Thursday

New South Wales residents across seven local government areas will be able to apply for the increased COVID-19 Disaster Payment as early as Thursday.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Tuesday announced a new, joint state-and federally-funded support package for residents and businesses impacted by Sydney’s coronavirus outbreak.

Under the package, from week four of a lockdown in a declared hotspot, the disaster payment will increase to $600 if a person has lost 20 or more hours of work a week, or $375 if a person has lost from eight to 19 hours of work a week.

From Thursday, eligible workers in Bayside, City of Sydney, Canada Bay, Inner West, Randwick, Waverley and Woollahra – the first seven LGAs to go into lockdown – will be able to apply for the recurring payment.

Payments will then be made from Friday, July 16.

Those across Greater Sydney and the remainder of New South Wales can make their own applications from Sunday, July 18, enabling payments to be made from Monday, July 19.

Payments will then be reoccurring on the Thursday for the seven LGAs and Sunday or Monday for the remainder of NSW.

Eligible workers will need a Centrelink Customer Reference Number and must have their myGov account linked to their Centrelink online account.
